I’ve personally worked Fr. Gary on housing renovation projects in the “Ville” St. Louis. He’s done so very much to fight poverty and promote peace among those in what’s a very dangerous and difficult neighborhood. During my time working with his projects which ultimately total a mere two weeks, his parish had suffered a shooting in the rectory.

I’m not religious, but I have a deep respect for those who dedicate themselves to a particular cause for the good of humanity and in Fr. Gary’s case admiration is an understatement.

I always keep a journal of some sort, primarily in print, but I’ve not kept any notes in quite a while. I don’t even know where I’ve left my books of reflections.

Last night I was bouncing around various bars between Logan Square, Wicker Park, Division and State, and River North. Ever place we stopped by, we were cut in front of the line greeted by name and given complimentary drinks. It’s been unique going about with someone who has such a wide network of connections and so I’m learning knows everyone. There I stand, a stranger, being taken with respect and open arms by people who would generally disregard my existence if I were not in the company I’ve been keeping of late. Through such a bustling night of repetitive greetings pretending to get along with everyone and fountains of drinks, I’ll admit I’ve made a few poor decisions in the mix of whirling lights and faces. Though I don’t quite feel as ridden with guilt nor regret in what I’ve partaken in. Perhaps it’s just a matter of a temporary scene which I know is not permanent that allows me to just simply “embrace” a wave of new experiences.

Today I woke up in a pounding headache of what should have been a lesson learned. I trudged myself out of bed to get my day going, stopping off to deposit my pay check was the only priority. Then of course the commute to work, where it seems my life is consumed by. I had left my phone in someone’s car last night, so I had to make a call or two to arrange a place to pick it up after work. So led me to tonight’s adventure which I managed to cut short and escape. I arrived at a multi-million dollar house to pick up my phone from my friends attending a rooftop party. A strange mix of the overly wealthy young yuppies and an eccentric blend of “artsy” individuals with deep pockets. I’ll admit the dj playing was quite fantastic and a much needed break from the crowd around me. As the DJ finished his last song of the night and everyone discussed plans to regroup at another roof top party overlooking the six corners in Wick Park I quickly jumped to make an excuse to part ways.

I’m half enjoying this strange luxury world I’ve managed to sneak into after the hours of work. Masquerading around as if I belong where I end up. This summer will be one that will not be forgotten.

I guess you could say I’m waking up. Realizing I’ve been chasing some dream, forgetting my past. I’ve forgotten where my passions lie, where I feel at home. However, I feel that my wrong turns have led me back into the direction I started. I have a plan for once and I’m going to do it as best I can.
